Onshape Description
Onshape is a revolutionary CAD software that redefines the way engineers and designers create, collaborate, and manage their projects. As a fully cloud-based platform, it eliminates the constraints of traditional file-based CAD systems, enabling users to access, edit, and share their designs in real-time from any device with an internet connection. This approach provides an unprecedented level of flexibility, making Onshape an ideal solution for businesses of all sizes, from startups to large enterprises.
Developed by the creators of SolidWorks, Onshape was designed to address common issues faced in traditional CAD environments, such as version control problems, data loss, and collaboration limitations. By utilizing a cloud-native architecture, Onshape enables seamless multi-user collaboration, allowing team members to work on the same design simultaneously. Unlike traditional CAD tools that require manual file sharing and tracking, Onshape ensures that all changes are instantly saved and accessible, reducing errors and improving workflow efficiency.
Onshape features a robust set of design tools, including parametric modeling, direct editing, and advanced assembly capabilities. Engineers can easily create complex parts and assemblies while maintaining design intent. The platform also includes built-in PDM (Product Data Management) tools, eliminating the need for separate software to handle versioning and document control.
Security is another strong point of Onshape. It employs enterprise-grade security measures, such as multi-factor authentication, encrypted storage, and activity tracking, ensuring that intellectual property remains protected. Companies can manage user permissions and track every change made to a design, ensuring accountability and reducing the risk of unauthorized access.
Onshape integrates seamlessly with third-party applications, including simulation, rendering, and manufacturing software, making it a versatile solution for a wide range of industries. Additionally, its API and scripting capabilities allow businesses to automate processes and customize the software to fit their unique workflows.
Overall, Onshape is an innovative CAD solution that enhances collaboration, streamlines workflows, and provides a secure environment for product development.

What do you like best?
Version control, App Store, FeatureScript. Part design is okay.
What do you dislike?
Terrible performance in assembly work. Lacking useful functionality because of design decisions relating to the interaction between Parts Studios, Assemblies, Derive, etc. Terrible performance. Terrible performance. Did I mention terrible performance? Graphics is as best 10-20 FPS on a good day. I see loading graphics animations every 10 seconds in Onshape. This is unacceptable for a production environment. I would rather use older software that runs locally. Web based CAD is not a replacement for Local machine CAD.
Look, if I pay for a product, I expect it to do the job. Showing me the reload times for how bad your parametric engine is at reloading is NOT PERFORMANCE. I shouldn't be spending time dealing with performance issues either.
We've spent numerous hours emailing back and forth with Onshape support, and frequently the response from OS staff is "redesign your assembly to perform better". I'm sorry but that's anti-customer. I'm not interested in sitting watching loading screens for simple PAN AND TILT CAMERA CHANGES. Much less item selection which is dreadful because of the low frames per second.
Dreadful software.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you have assembly work to do, don't do it in Onshape. For single parts and drawings it's probably fine and performance issues are probably okay to deal with, but the truth is it does not work well for assemblies or derived parts or anything parametric. Give up on using configurations because you will reload every single time you change. Whats the point even?
What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
None. I wouldn't recommend Onshape to anybody who had money to spend on a CAD system. Solidworks is a more complete package and Fusion 360 has better vision for the future of CAD/CAM (hint, local processors and integrated software features). Cloud CAD isn't worth it, Onshape tries but misses the mark for me.
Response from Kimberley Salmon of Onshape

As you can see with many of the other reviews of Onshape, we pride ourselves on our best-in-class customer support and would like the opportunity to work together to make things right. Thanks!
What do you like best?
Flexibility in the way you model and structure documents, efficient conceptual modeling
What do you dislike?
Constantly waiting for things to load, commands to take effect, dragged items to move, etc
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Brilliant for smaller designs and assemblies, not ideal yet for designing in large or complex assemblies.
What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
Solidworks alternative
What do you like best?
Good software with a decent tool set. Browser based so easy to use across all platforms. Cloud stored so very easy collaboration. Essential and well implemented version control - this is a must have if modern agile workflows are desired. Mating of parts in assemblies is amazing, doubt I could ever go back. Used to use Solidworks but the previous reasons made me choose to switch to Onshape for the beginning of our companies journey.
What do you dislike?
Online only means you have to have internet, this can be annoying. This also means my computer can't help out if things are being slow which with large assemblies and in context design they can be. Although no slower than Solidworks on a decent workstation. Integrations like FEA and CAM are great but they are almost all more subscriptions so cost is ridiculous if you only need it rarely. My personal gripe is that recently they have changed the terms and conditions so that with the free account you designs are public property. As an design engineer and a maker this means I can't use Onshape for my private use and so have to use a different CAD package outside work. If I had known this it would have seriously made me consider other options for my company.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Unfortunately Onshape is moving more to the professional market and leaving makers in the dust with price increases and terms and condition changes. This makes sense as they are following the money. If this bothers you as it does me then consider other options carefully. Regardless Onshape is an excellent CAD system and they are leading the way in CAD innovation. This is the future of CAD, I am certain.
What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
Designing of machines for automation of microfluidics for life sciences
What do you like best?
To create quick 3D models to help into my work. To help CAD designers and suppliers to develop faster toolings
What do you dislike?
Not so easy to understand every step to create a 3D model through the different tools at the beggining of the learing curve. Sometimes is not so intuitive like Catia
What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
Basic 3D models to heklp my work
What do you like best?
Clean graphic, more acceptable on opening other format files and overall system of part studio and assembly studio.
What do you dislike?
No measuring tool (So need it) and no calculation function in dimension box and sometimes it goes slow because internet connection. I found mating in assembly is not so straight forward when it comes to simple mating.
What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
Sharing files with people.
