Flipgrid is a free, discussion-based learning platform originally designed for educational settings to promote student voice and engagement. Developed in 2014 and acquired by Microsoft in 2018, Flipgrid allows educators to create digital discussion boards where students respond using short, expressive video messages—now transformed into interactive posts using built-in creative tools.

Teachers create “grids” (virtual classrooms) and post “topics” (discussion prompts). Students respond to these prompts asynchronously through rich media responses using Flipgrid’s intuitive interface. Though the standalone Flipgrid app and site were retired in late 2024, its core functionality has been integrated into Microsoft Teams for Education.

Flipgrid enhances participation for learners across all ages and abilities by offering built-in accessibility features such as Immersive Reader and closed captioning. Educators can moderate responses, invite guests, and use rubrics to assess student submissions. With easy login through Google or Microsoft accounts and seamless integration with platforms like Google Classroom, Flipgrid remains a versatile tool for blended and remote learning environments.
