Apache OpenOffice traces its origins to StarOffice, a suite developed by StarDivision in the 1980s. After Sun Microsystems acquired StarDivision in 1999, the suite was released as an open-source project named OpenOffice.org. In 2011, the project transitioned to the Apache Software Foundation, adopting the name Apache OpenOffice.
